Lost or Damaged Materials

*Patrons who have longer borrowing periods than 21 days may have their loan shortened by a recall from another user. The only guaranteed loan period is 21 days.
*Due to limited quantities or high demand of video equipment (video cameras and camcorders), patrons can only check out one of these items at a time.

Lost or Damaged Library Material
- If a general collection item is lost the borrower will pay $100 per item based on the following library costs:
- $65 replacement fee
- $35 processing fee
- If a laptop is lost the borrower will pay the following:
- $1400 laptop replacement fee
- $100 lost laptop adapter fee

If other technology items are lost or damaged, patron will pay a fee based on the replacement cost or replacement parts, and time spent making repairs.
- Other lost item costs:
- $30 lost mac VGA adapter fee
- $60 lost mac mouse fee
- Any general collection item overdue for 60 days is considered lost
- Any laptops or adapters overdue for 30 days are considered lost
- Audiovisual materials and videos overdue for 14 days are considered lost
- The borrower is liable for replacement or repair costs of damages while items are checked out on their account
Notices
Student, faculty, and staff notices are sent via UNC Charlotte email
Non-UNC Charlotte borrowers notices are sent via email on record
It is the patrons' responsibility to ensure they have the correct email and mailing address in their record
Because overdue notices are sent as a courtesy to the borrower, failure to receive such a notice does not excuse the borrower from the payment of fines.

Patrons forfeit their right to borrow library materials in the following situations:
- when they have material that is more than 30 days overdue
- owe $10.00 or more in fines
- have charges from the preceding academic year
Students will not be able to receive their transcripts or register for classes if they have any indebtedness to the University, including the library.
Fines
The purpose of fines is not to serve as a source of revenue, but rather an incentive for responsible social behavior when using shared resources. In order to ensure maximum availability, the library sends out due date reminders through email. Fines are charged for long overdue items (60 days past due) and failure to return recalled items by the due date.
Borrowers are subject to the following fines:

Your library account will be blocked from circulation and renewals if any item is 30 days past due or there are $10 of charges on your account.
Paying your fines
Students
- Fines can be paid at the circulation desk during the semester in which the fines accrued.
- All fines are transferred to your student account at the end of each semester
Faculty/Staff
- Fines can be paid at the circulation desk during the semester in which the fines accrued.
- Fines totaling $10 or more will be sent to the payroll office for deduction
All other borrowers
- Library privileges are blocked until payment is received at the circulation desk.
Request for Review of Library Charges
Patrons may request a review of library charges form. To request a review, fill out the following Request for Review of Library Charges Form. You may also request a form at the Circulation Desk.
Refunds on the Return of Lost and Paid Books
- The library does not accept patron-purchased items as replacements
- Regardless of whether payment has been made for the item, the library item will remain the property of the University.
- Any person who falsely claims to have lost library material simply to retain possession can be charged for illegally possessing State property.
- Only partial refunds will be given for any item returned after payment is accepted or bill is sent to the appropriate office
- Partial refunds of $65 per item may be given if the items is less than 6 months overdue
- No refunds will be given for items that are more than 6 months overdue
