Darrell Waltrip won the race, with a margin of victory of 1.8 seconds. Richard Petty won the pole position which would be the last time for his race car and as a driver until 1996. The other top ten finishers were Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Benny Parsons, Cale Yarborough, Joe Millikan, David Pearson, Terry Labonte, Ricky Rudd, and Bill Elliott. David Pearson was substituting for Dale Earnhardt in this race. Dale Earnhardt missed four races, all which were all relieved by Pearson, whose seventh-place finish was his worst in those four races for sponsor Rod Osterlund.
