1974 Charlotte Motor Speedway Events

1974 August Jam Rock Music Festival
The images in this collection document August Jam, an outdoor Woodstock-style festival that took place on Saturday, August 10, 1974, at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. Headlining acts included the Allman Brothers Band, Foghat, the Marshall Tucker Band, and Black Oak Arkansas. The Eagles were meant to attend, but cancelled. Attended by more than 200,000 people, August Jam was the largest concert ever held in North Carolina and the largest in the U.S. at the time. There was a limited number of tickets sold prior to the concert. However, thousands of fans showed up on the day of the performance and crashed the fence in order to attend.
1974 Autopair 300
The 1974 Autopair 300 race took place at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, on August, 18, 1974. Driving a Porsche Carrera, Peter Gregg finished first. The 1974 Autopair 300 collection also includes images of an associated motorsports event, the IMSA B.F. Goodrich Radial Challenge, in which Patrick Bedard and Ron Nash drove a 1972 Ford Pinto to victory.
1974 National 500
This collection contains images that document the 1974 National 500, a NASCAR Winston Cup event that was held on October 6, 1974, at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. David Pearson finished first in the race, with Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Donnie Allison, Bobby Allison, Lennie Pond, Harry Jefferson, Dick Trickle, Bob Burcham, and Dan Daughtry rounding out the top ten. Several major crashes took place during the race, including a ten-car crash that involved Buddy Baker and a crash into the outside wall by Marty Robbins that resulted in serious injuries to his face.

This was the thirteenth race on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule in 1975, and was shortened by 40 laps due to the energy crisis. David Pearson scored the victory during the Purolator Mercury for the Wood Brothers. Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip, and Earl Ross finished in the top-five. The race was slowed eight times for 48 laps. There were 37 lead changes. The average speed was 132.72 mph. Pearson scored the pole with a speed of 157.498 mph. The time of race was 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 21 seconds. 84,000 people were in attendance. The collection also features images of golf matches, parties, and a concert featuring noted country music performer Del Reeves.
