Description

Marianne Lieberman recounts her childhood in German-occupied Austria as the daughter of a Jewish father and Catholic mother. She describes how her loss of identity under those conditions caused her to question authority and to seek ways to express herself. Immigrating to New York after World War II, she recalls finding work as a seamstress and seeking ways to further her love of art. She discusses moving to Charlotte in 1951 and becoming an artist of some renown while also raising a family. Mrs. Lieberman also describes her involvement in pro-choice activism and founded the Charlotte chapter of the National Abortion Rights Action League Foundation (NARAL).

Interviewee Biography: Marianne Lieberman was a 66-year-old woman at the time of interview, which took place in her home in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born in Vienna, Austria in 1927. She was educated as an artist and pattern designer and was employed as a textile worker and as an artist.
