Interviewee Biography

Bill Brown was a 72-year-old man at the time of interview, which took place in his home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was born in Yadkin County, North Carolina in 1935. He was educated at Hanes High School and was employed as a master mechanic and crew chief.

Abstract

Bill Brown discusses his experiences as a mechanic for racecar drivers Billy and Bobby Myers during the 1950s. He recalls his relationship with the racing brothers and reflects upon his experiences with other racecar drivers such as Fireball Roberts, the Pettys, and Earnhardt families. The interview also includes a discussion of photographs from Mr. Brown's career. Mr. Brown explains the evolution in modifying racecars to make NASCAR competition more efficient, safe, and enjoyable.
